The Story

Shaw Nature Reserve, Gray Summit, MO
( 12:45 - 1:15 )

50 minutes was all it took to eliminate this prairie. Except for a few isolated patches of brown grasses and scorched twigs, all that remained was a large charred and blackened swatch of earth. The end result was a bit depressing, but the show prior to and during the controlled burn was exciting. A tool called a driptorch was used to lay down the line of fire and backpack water sprayers were used to control the fire line and extinguish any spot fires that jumped the line. It was a big, orchestrated event that required an assembly of professionals and volunteers. After the show, I gave them all a standing ovation. Mostly clear skies with temps in the upper 70s.
