The Story

Shaw Nature Reserve, Gray Summit, MO
( 10:30 - 11:30 )

According to the Missouri Prairie Foundation, blackberries  rank third in their top ten list of edible native shrubs and trees. Clove or golden currant and the serviceberry took first and second place. I thought the unripened, red berries looked striking surrounded by all of the lush green foliage. However, after tasting a few of what appeared to be ripe, black ones, I decided to just paint them, because they looked far better than they tasted. Mercy, they were some bitter and sour berries. They placed a pucker on my face and sent a shiver down my spine. Nice cloudy morning with temps in the upper 70s.
